TES 4: Oblivion FAQ
Overview
What are The Elder Scrolls?
The Elder Scrolls are a collection of games set in the world of Tamriel.
They are renowned for there open ended gaming and their huge areas to explore.
The Elder Scrolls games are Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redgaurd, Morrowind,
Tribunal and Bloodmoon (the expansions to Morrowind) and of course Oblivion
which is still in development.
Will the game be a direct continuation of Morrowind?
Oblivion will not be a direct continuation of Morrowind. It will however
most likely take place after the events of Morrowind as the emperor was still
alive during that timeframe, though how far off is uncertain.
General Information
Who is developing/publishing Oblivion?
Bethesda will be both the developer and the publisher for Oblivion.
When is Oblivion being released?
The GameInformer article says to expect a release sometime in Winter 2005,
however Bethesda is unable to confirm the release date which is unsurprising
given how far off they are from completing the game. The prevailing
opinion is that Oblivion will appear in stores pre-Christmas 2005.
What will be the system requirements for Oblivion?
Bethesda has refused to divulge any information on this subject, but by taking
one look at those screenshots one thing is clear: you will need a hell of a good
PC to play this game at it's maximum settings.
What engine is Oblivion being developed on?
Bethesda has not officially commented on this save to say that they have NOT
licensed the Unreal 3 engine as was previously hinted. They have however
confirmed that oblivion will use a highly modified Havok Physics engine.
Game Play
What style of game is Oblivion?
Oblivion is a non-linear RPG. This means that the game immerses you by not
focusing entirely on the main quest. You are also able to access all areas
from the beginning of the game, kill all NPCs, and choose to play the game in
any fashion you chose.
Can you give me a basic overview of the plot?
Yes, your character begins in a prison cell under the imperial palace. An
assassination attempt is made on the life of the emperor and he attempts to
escape through a tunnel leading through your cell. Unfortunately all the
emperors guards, and eventually the emperor are killed. Before he dies
the emperor gives you the amulet of kings and instructs you to find he who
can close fast the gates of oblivion. Basically the emperors death has
opened up portals to Oblivion, hell, all over Cyrodill and demonic creatures are
invading the land and it is up to you to stop them. Good Luck.
Will Oblivion be bigger or smaller then Morrowind?
Despite Bethesdas previous indications to the contrary Oblivion will actually
be BIGGER then Morrowind! It will however seem to be smaller due to an
overhauled fast travel system.
Where in Tamriel will Oblivion be set?
Oblivion will be set in the imperial province of Cyrodiil (for more information
on Cyrodiil visit the lore section at
http://www.oblivionportal.com/info/lore.php). Parts of the game will
also take place in Oblivion the Tamrielic version of hell (for more information
on Oblivion visit the lore section at
http://www.oblivionportal.com/info/lore.php)
What Races will be playable?
It is assumed that Oblivion will feature the Elder Scrolls stalwarts, i.e., Dark
Elves, High Elves, Wood Elves, Argonians, Khajiit, (excuse my spelling), Nords,
Redgaurds, Bretons, and of course, the Imperials.
What creatures will populate Cyrodill?
From the screenshots we can see; goblins, a daedroth, and a Minotaur. More
will be added as they are revealed.
What changes have been made to the combat system?
The combat system has been significantly overhauled. Todd Howard promises
combat as thrilling as a FPS while at the same time not being twitch based.
What new skills are there?
Vary little has been announced as to how the oblivion skills will differ from in
Morrowind but it has been made clear that all the Morrowind magic skills will
return.
